Insurers: embrace innovation in legal services to cut your legal spend and meet your profit targets

It’s a truth known by all businesses – to grow, you need to innovate. New products, new distribution, new solutions, new ways of working. Competition is fierce, especially in the insurance industry where margins remain tight following years of falling premiums.

And yet, in legal services conservative attitudes still prevail in some quarters. Insurers have embraced the legal panel and this has limited rises in charge out rates more than some industries. However, the costs of using law firms remain high and constitute a significant portion of a claims or legal function’s overall budget.

Legal consultants are an alternative way of obtaining expert legal support from the same skilled, experienced lawyers at a fraction of the price. Expert services, delivered flexibly at a much lower cost.

Doing things differently can invite caution or skepticism. These are the questions that some of our clients ask before they sign up:

How are you regulated?

We have adopted a now well-established model of alternative legal services. We are a consultancy that provides expert legal consultants i.e. contract lawyers, to claims or legal teams on an out-of-office basis. From a regulatory perspective, it is no different from having temporary contract staff. However, the product that is delivered can feel similar to that of a law firm.

There are now numerous examples of this in Asia (e.g. Lawyers on Demand, Axiom Legal etc) that have been in business for more than a decade, serving clients such as Google, Barclays and adidas. Whilst these large firms are large organisations attempting to be all things to all businesses, Harrison & Co is a specialist boutique consultancy operating within the insurance industry providing claims and legal expertise as good as any available in private practice in Asia – at a fraction of the price.

Why are you so much cheaper than a law firm?

We are not a law firm and do not carry the same costs e.g. expensive offices, secretaries, legal support lawyers, an HR department, a business development team and senior management expenses, to name a few. We have stripped out all of these costs and have passed the benefit to you, the client.

How do you deliver the services?

The flexibility of the services we deliver is where we come into our own. Our consultants can work in a similar way to a law firm, by email, telephone/videocon and in-person meetings or more as part of the internal team, with a company laptop and email address – and anywhere in between. We can undertake specific projects or just be on-call to assist with matters as they arise.

We have worked on-site with clients and would be happy to discuss specific needs with you.
